Over the past two years, I have implemented various measures to increase my level of happiness at work . A first step in improving my workdays began with the conscious choice to pay more attention to the selection of courses and training offered through my employer.

Instead of seeing the courses simply as being applicable to the work I currently do, I decided to think more broadly about how each course can be useful for my future. Furthermore, although we are on track to achieve financial independence by 2025 , we still have a good 5-6 years of depending on our jobs, so we might as well acquire knowledge and tools that can help us perform better and generally make our workdays more enjoyable.

Indeed, in his interview with Mad Fientist , author Cal Newport, who wrote, among other excellent books,  So Good They Can’t Ignore You,  explains how the standard recommendation of « follow your passion and you will be happy » is wrong. According to his research, people manage to get more pleasure and be happy when they become good at something because it allows them to acquire autonomy, skills and then to feel connected and valued by the people around them. So, what better way to become better at doing my job than to optimize the training programs offered by my employer.

Optimizing the training offered by your employer1I have taken the perspective that these courses can enrich not only my role in my current job but also any entrepreneurial project  that I undertake during the trajectory or even when I have reached financial independence.

I started by taking some planning and organization courses. The usefulness of such courses is easily justified for my work as a financial analyst, for example, to effectively manage a high level of information and files. Obviously, on the entrepreneurial side, since planning and organization comes 100% from within oneself, it is a fairly essential asset to master.

I then took a course aimed at developing the management of difficult behaviors in the workplace. Given that part of my job is related to complaint management, I sometimes have to deal with difficult behaviors, so the course is very applicable to my job. However, the usefulness goes far beyond that since in everyday life we ​​encounter difficult behaviors.

Bref, en ayant une vue d’ensemble de mes intérêts et objectifs, j’ai été en mesure de me développer une liste assez complète de type de cours que j’aimerais prendre dans les prochaines années. Ma liste de cours à venir comprend des ateliers d’enrichissement sur l’écriture, la communication, négociation et plusieurs autres cours que j’ai bien hâte de suivre. Une belle variété de sujets qui peuvent améliorer ma capacité à faire mon travail mais également mes capacités à accomplir toutes sortes de tâches associées à générer de l’argent par l’entremise d’activités entrepreneuriales. De plus, certains de ces cours seront aussi utiles dans la vie de tous les jours tout en m’aidant à acquérir des compétences en lien avec certains de mes passe-temps tels que l’écriture de ce blogue.

Opter pour des cours de qualité

Optimizing the training offered by your employer2J’ai aussi porté une attention particulière aux organisations et spécifiquement aux personnes qui donnent les cours en question. Comme les employeurs payent pour la formation de leurs employés ils ont normalement intérêt à ce que les cours soit de haute qualité et donc devraient être en mesure de recommander certains cours.

De mon côté, j’ai accès à différentes listes indiquant ce que les employés ont choisi comme cours par le passé. Cette liste comprend également des conférences et différents évènements accessibles puis parfois des compte rendu d’employés qui y ont assistés par le passé.

Vous avez ensuite la possibilité de faire des recherches sur les sites web des institutions qui fournies les cours ou ailleurs afin de vérifier quel est l’appréciation du cours. Par exemple, j’ai choisi un cours spécifique de planification et d’organisation grâce à de telles recherches. En effet, l’organisation en question présentait des commentaires d’anciens participants et ce cours était particulièrement bien noté par de nombreuses personnes dans des domaines très variés puis les résultats semblaient démontrer que le cours était applicable bien au-delà de son travail.

Après avoir suivi ce cours que j’ai grandement apprécié surtout grâce à la variété des connaissances partagées mais également grâce à la performance de l’enseignante donnant le cours, j’ai effectué des recherches afin de découvrir les autres cours et ateliers offerts par cette même enseignante. J’ai ainsi trouvé un excellent cours concernant la gestion du temps qui m’a d’ailleurs beaucoup servi dans la poursuite de mes activités entrepreneurial les soirs et fin de semaines. En guise de boni, cette enseignante vie de diverses activitées entrepreneuriales donc c’était vraiment intéressant de l’entendre raconter ses propres expériences!

In this case, I recommend gathering the good testimonials you’ve found and then clearly presenting your reasons for wanting to take the course. Specifically explain how taking the course will give you an advantage and tools to better perform your job.

Some employers are even willing to pay for longer-term certifications like CPAs and part-time master’s degrees for their employees. Find out if this is something you’re interested in, as you can save a lot of money doing so! There are also sometimes back-to-school bonuses, so keep an eye out for various employer initiatives.

Review the documents received after the training session

I recycle what I won’t need anymore, organize the notes I’ll keep, and digitize what’s more cumbersome. This way, I know where to find the information if I need it in the future, and this step also helps me better absorb the information given in the class.

Benefits of being involved in optimizing the training offered by your employer

Ultimately, when our reasoning for choosing to take a course is well thought out, it’s quite surprising to see the extent of the knowledge we acquire. Indeed, since we are in a more receptive state of mind and we clearly understand the benefits that can come from this course, we are more likely to discover tips that will be applicable to ourselves.

I’m more organized and have used some of the methods I learned in the courses to make changes in my organization for the better. Also, since I already have a good list of courses I’m looking forward to attending, it has the effect of somewhat minimizing my anticipation of achieving financial independence.
